If you choose this option, you may decide to hike to the Sun Gate. The hike is feasible for travelers of all ages of average fitness.

At 2745 meters (9005 feet) above sea level, the gate is almost as high as the peak of Wayna Picchu, but the trek there is much gentler, with a slow rise from the ancient city rather than a steep climb.

The view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate is spectacular, and would have provided the first glimpse of the city for ancient travelers coming from Cuzco.

At the Summer Equinox an ancient inhabitant of the city could have watched the sun rise over this gate.
